40 Day Bible Reading Challenge: Day 39 Jesus Describes the End Times
Mark Chapter 13, often referred to as the "Olivet Discourse," is a profound section of the Gospel according to Mark, where Jesus speaks to his disciples about the future, encompassing both the destruction of Jerusalem and the end times. The discourse begins as Jesus leaves the temple, and one of his disciples comments on the magnificent buildings. Jesus then predicts that these grand structures will be utterly demolished, with not one stone left upon another. This shocking prophecy leads the disciples to ask Jesus privately about when these events will occur and what signs will precede them.
In response, Jesus provides a series of warnings and predictions. He talks about the coming of false prophets, wars, earthquakes, and famines, describing them as the "beginnings of birth pains." He emphasizes the need for vigilance and faithfulness, cautioning his followers not to be deceived. Jesus also foretells significant persecutions for his followers, advising them to remain steadfast. Further, he predicts the desolation of the holy place, a reference to events that will lead up to the destruction of Jerusalem. Jesus instructs his disciples to be watchful for these signs, indicating that such calamities will precede his return.
Lastly, Jesus discusses the signs of the end times in more detail, highlighting cosmic disturbances and the coming of the Son of Man in clouds with great power and glory. He uses the parable of the fig tree to teach about recognizing the signs of the times, urging his disciples to learn from it as an indication that the kingdom of God is near. Despite these ominous warnings, Jesus emphasizes that no one, not even he nor the angels, knows the day or hour of these events, only the Father. Therefore, he concludes with a call to vigilance, urging his disciples to keep watch because they do not know when the time will come.
