40 Day Bible Reading Challenge Day 22 : Jesus describes the end of time
Matthew Chapter 24 is a pivotal portion of the New Testament, where Jesus speaks to his disciples about the end times and the signs that will precede his second coming. This discourse occurs on the Mount of Olives, giving it the name "Olivet Discourse." Jesus begins by predicting the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem, which leads the disciples to ask Him about the sign of His coming and of the end of the age. Jesus then warns them about the rise of false prophets, widespread deception, and the increase of wickedness, emphasizing the need for vigilance, faithfulness, and perseverance among his followers.
He goes on to describe a series of cataclysmic events and tribulations that the world will face, including wars, famines, earthquakes, and persecution of believers. These events, he explains, are just the beginning of birth pains. Jesus speaks of the Great Tribulation, a period of unprecedented hardship, and the appearance of the "abomination of desolation" prophesied by Daniel. He underscores the importance of readiness, as the exact time of these events is unknown even to Him, only to the Father. The coming of the Son of Man will be unmistakable, like lightning that lights up the sky, gathering His elect from the four winds.
Finally, Jesus uses parables to illustrate the necessity of watchfulness and preparedness for His return. The parable of the fig tree teaches that just as one can discern the approach of summer by the tree’s leaves, so too can one recognize the signs of the times signaling His imminent return. He stresses that the day and hour are unknown, urging his disciples to stay alert and conduct themselves in a manner worthy of His kingdom. This chapter closes with a sobering reminder that at the end of the age, individuals will be separated based on their faithfulness to Christ’s teachings and their readiness for His return.
