40 Day Bible Reading Challenge Day 5 Practical Guidance for a Righteous Life

Matthew Chapter 7 concludes Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, focusing on practical guidance for living a righteous life. The chapter opens with a caution against judgmental attitudes, emphasizing that the standard one uses to judge others will be applied to oneself. It introduces the famous adage, "Do not judge, or you too will be judged," encouraging a stance of humility and self-examination before critiquing others. Jesus then discusses the importance of seeking and the assurance of receiving help from God, encapsulated in the instruction to "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you." This is complemented by the Golden Rule: "So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you," which serves as a foundational ethical principle.

The chapter also contains warnings about false prophets and the importance of discernment, illustrating that true and false followers can be distinguished by their actions, much like trees are known by their fruits. Jesus stresses that not everyone who outwardly appears devout, even those who prophesy, cast out demons, or perform miracles in his name, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only those who do the will of the Father. The chapter concludes with the parable of the wise and foolish builders, symbolizing the difference between those who hear and act on Jesus' words, likened to a house built on a rock, versus those who hear and do not act, likened to a house built on sand. This parable serves as a compelling metaphor for the stability and security found in living according to Jesus' teachings.
